Effect of sewage loading on the prevalence of Sphaerotilus natans.

چکیده
Although biological treatment of sewage by activated sludge or trickling filters is widely practiced, these processes still give rise to difficulties. The difficulties may be due to sludge bulking during the activated sludge process or to clogging during the operation of trickling filters. In his studies of biofilters and standard filters, H. Heukelekian (Sewage Works J. 17:23, 516, and 743, 1945; Ind. Eng. Chem. 41:1412, 1945) has demonstrated a relationship between film accumulation and nitrifying and purifying capacity. Sewage usually contains a variety of filamentous growths ranging from bacteria to the ramifying branched mycelia of true fungi. Undesirable bulking of activated sludge in sewage treatment plants is attributed to the development of a species of Sphaerotilus (N. C. Dondero, R. A. Phillips, and H. Heukelekian, Appl. Microbiol. 9:219, 1961; J. B. Lackey and E. Wattie, Public Health Rept. U.S. 55:975, 1940; D. A. Okun, Sewage Works J. 21:763, 1949; C. C. Ruchhoff and J. F. Kachmar, Sewage Works J. 18:1, 1941). Several reports on this subject have appeared, and, as a consequence, the organism has been widely studied. The work so far carried out has been mainly confined to the isolation and identification of the different species of Sphaerotilus occurring in treated sewage. Although these observations have added considerably to the understanding of some of the biological aspects of waste treatment, further work is needed, particularly on the effect of loading on the development of S. natans during biological treatment. In the course of an investigation of this aspect of sewage

Prevalence of broad-host-range lytic bacteriophages of Sphaerotilus natans, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Two bacteriophage collections were examined with regard to their ability to form plaques on multiple bacterial host species. Nine of 10 phages studied were found to be broad-host-range bacteriophages. These phages fell into two groups. Group 1, the SN series, was isolated from sewage treatment plant samples with Sphaerotilus natans ATCC 13338 as a host. The DNAs of these bacteriophages containe...

The capsular polysaccharide of Sphaerotilus natans has been isolated, purified, and analyzed. Chromatographic and chemical analyses performed on acid hydrolyzates of the purified material have shown that the major components are fucose, galactose, glucose, and glucuronic acid in approximately equimolar amounts. Glucose and glucuronic acid are believed to occur as an aldobiuronic acid unit.

متن کاملA spatial relationship between sheath elongation and cell proliferation in Sphaerotilus natans.
Sphaerotilus natans is a filamentous sheath-forming bacterium. A method of selective fluorescent-labeling of its sheath using conventional reagents was developed. Terminal expansion of the sheath was confirmed by this method. In addition, ubiquitous cell growth was revealed by sequential phase-contrast microscopy of a filament. Based on this and earlier reports, a model of the sheath formation ...
متن کاملSphaerotilus natans encrusted with nanoball-shaped Fe(III) oxide minerals formed by nitrate-reducing mixotrophic Fe(II) oxidation
Ferrous iron has been known to function as an electron source for iron-oxidizing microorganisms in both anoxic and oxic environments. A diversity of bacteria has been known to oxidize both soluble and solid-phase Fe(II) forms coupled to the reduction of nitrate. Here, we show for the first time Fe(II) oxidation by Sphaerotilus natans strain DSM 6575(T) under mixotrophic condition. Sphaerotilus ...
